Origin
Our saffron comes from the region around the Iranian city of Mashad. We have partnerships with local farmers and cut out the middleman to ensure good prizes, fair treatment of the farmers, and high quality saffron. Iranian saffron is famous world wide for its outstanding quality. Saffron historically originates from Iran, the climate and soil are ideal for the saffron crocus which is the flower that saffron is won from. Our saffron is super negin saffron. This is one of Iran’s finest types of saffron. The filaments of the flower are handpicked and dried to produce saffron. Over 150 flowers can be necessary to produce 1 gram of saffron. This fact together with the intense flavour, colour and smell of saffron makes it a unique and valuable spice. These characteristics rightly give saffron its nickname: the red gold.
Using saffron
Saffron can be used in many different dishes like paella or traditional yellow Persian rice. Saffron also has many health benefits. The compound giving saffron its characteristic colour is Crocine, which is an anti-oxidant with anti-depressant capabilities.
Saffron can be directly added to stew-type dishes but we recommend solving the saffron in hot water before adding it. To make a saffron solution ground the saffron threads for instance using a mortar. A few threads (half a teaspoon) of saffron can be enough for a four-person dish. Add 2 spoons of hot water (just under boiling temperature) to the grounded saffron and let it rest for 15 minutes with a lid on it. You can add the saffron solution now to your dish. Saffron can also be used to make saffron tea. Take a look at our cooking with saffron page for more inspiration.
Storing saffron
Store saffron in a dry and dark place. Do not store it in the fridge and try to keep the temperature constant around roomtemperature (do not store it near heat sources such as your stove).
